Partly due to the fact that I completed my Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, as well as being an educator (Brown University from 1970 to 1975), and have observed the liberal arts curriculum from a first-hand perspective (Brown University) It is my belief that teaching should be a fusion of studies in art along with different subjects. It's not unusual for an ethnomusicologist (MA 1967 and PhD from UCLA)! My ethnomusicology program, which I started with UC Berkeley in 1975-1976, is located within an music department within a College of Letters and Science. I am a fan of pursuing multiple passions and looking at the whole view. I really enjoy teaching both undergraduates (majors and non-majors), for whom I have written three books - Music in India Music in India: Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically as well as Music in Japan: Experiencing Cultural Expression, Music) and graduate students. Also, I rotate periods during which I am pursuing primarily academic activities in addition to periods of administrative duties to my schedule (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-98, Chair all the Deans at the College of Letters and Science 1994-98, Chair of the Group of Asian Studies from 1999 and currently as Chair of the Department of Music again).
